A 47-year-old man, Adetayo Adewodun, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a Lagos State court for impersonating a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer and extorting N7,800 from a motorist.
Adewodun, who pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of impersonation and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, was apprehended on October 7, 2025, by LASTMA operatives during a surveillance operation.
According to LASTMA, Adewodun and his accomplices targeted a motorist, Mr. Ayano Stephen, driving a white Hilux, for allegedly making an illegal turn at Itire Junction. Posing as a legitimate LASTMA officer, Adewodun demanded N80,000 as a penalty, but the motorist handed over N7,800, the only cash he had, under duress.
The court ordered Adewodun’s remand pending the perfection of his bail conditions, and the case has been adjourned for further hearing.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the court’s decision as “commendable” and reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing order and discipline on Lagos roads while protecting residents from harassment and fraudulent activities.
