All eyes will be on the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa today as the Super Eagles of Nigeria face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, one that could determine Nigeria’s fate in the competition.
The Super Eagles’ qualification hopes had dimmed after a 1–1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on September 1, but a recent FIFA ruling docked South Africa points for fielding an ineligible player, throwing the race for Group C wide open once again.
That decision narrowed the gap at the top of the table, leaving Nigeria just three points behind Benin and South Africa with two matches left to play — a glimmer of hope for José Peseiro’s men.
Nigeria cannot afford any slip-up in their remaining fixtures, starting with Friday’s encounter against Lesotho. A win is non-negotiable if they are to keep their qualification dreams alive, while also hoping South Africa drop points against Zimbabwe or Rwanda.

With Benin leading on 14 points (+4 goal difference), South Africa second also on 14 points (+2), and Nigeria sitting third on 11 points (+2), every goal and every point now carries enormous weight. Rwanda follow closely behind with 11 points and a neutral goal difference.
Nigeria and Lesotho have met three times since 2019 — with Nigeria winning twice and drawing once. However, the Crocodiles held the Eagles to a shock 1–1 draw in Uyo on November 16, 2023, and will be hoping to repeat that upset in front of their home crowd.
The Super Eagles’ campaign so far has been inconsistent, recording two wins, five draws, and one defeat, while Lesotho have managed two wins, three draws, and three losses.
Speaking at a press conference in Polokwane on Thursday, Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle urged his players to stay aggressive and disciplined from kickoff, noting that “football can be unpredictable,” with factors such as officiating, weather, and individual mistakes capable of altering outcomes.
Still, Chelle maintained confidence in his team’s preparation and mentality, insisting the sole focus remains on securing all three points.
