A devastating accident occurred on Wednesday evening in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, where a cement-laden truck belonging to Dangote Cement lost control and rammed into roadside traders and pedestrians, killing at least eight people.
The victims included a pregnant woman, her child, five males, and two females.
The incident happened near the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University and the popular Holy Trinity Church.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck suffered brake failure while descending into the densely populated area, resulting in the tragic accident.
The community has been thrown into chaos, with residents and students trooping to the scene.
This incident has reignited calls for the government to ban heavy-duty trucks from plying Akungba roads, a demand the Students’ Union has been pushing for, citing safety concerns.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, with Sector Commander Samuel Ibitoye advising motorists to ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition before hitting the road.
The university’s student union government described the crash as heartbreaking and urged students to remain calm while they work to maintain peace and order within the community.
