Rivers United produced a sensational comeback to secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stage, overturning a first-leg defeat to beat Mozambique’s Black Bulls 3–1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, sealing a 3–2 aggregate victory.

The win marks a major milestone for Nigerian football, as Rivers United become the first Nigeria Premier League side to reach the group stage of Africa’s elite club competition since Lobi Stars achieved the feat in the 2018/19 season.

Trailing 1–0 from the first leg in Maputo, the Pride of Rivers entered the decisive fixture under pressure but started brightly, dictating the pace and creating early chances. Their first breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Wasiu Falolu calmly slotted home to level the tie on aggregate.

The momentum stayed with the hosts, and in the 42nd minute, Falolu was fouled just outside the box, resulting in a penalty that Maclyn Biokpo confidently converted to make it 2–0 before halftime.

Black Bulls struck back just two minutes after the restart through Moctar Diallo, briefly restoring hope for the visitors. However, Rivers United regained control, with head coach Finidi George introducing Rivio Ayemwenre and Samson Obi in the 65th minute to inject pace and energy.

Their efforts paid off in the 75th minute when Timothy Zachariah, who had been a constant threat throughout the match, unleashed a brilliant strike to put the tie beyond the Mozambican side.

Rivers United held firm in the closing stages, displaying resilience and discipline to protect their advantage and complete a famous 3–1 victory on the night — and 3–2 on aggregate.

The result ends Nigeria’s six-year absence from the CAF Champions League group stage and underscores Rivers United’s growing reputation on the continent.

Finidi George’s men will now await the group-stage draw scheduled for November 3 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
