The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has adjourned the defamation trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to December 1, 2025, for the hearing of a preliminary objection filed by the defence.

The senator is facing a three-count charge bordering on alleged harmful imputation over purported defamatory statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

The adjournment was made after the prosecuting counsel, David Kaswe, informed the court that the prosecution had been unable to serve its response on the defence team, requesting an adjournment to allow for proper service of documents. The defence counsel did not object to the request.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team filed a preliminary objection challenging the competence of the charges and the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the high-profile personalities involved and the broader implications for political speech and defamation laws in Nigeria.
