Libya is being urged to shut down its migrant detention centers, where human rights groups claim individuals are subjected to torture, abuse, and even death.
During a U.N. meeting, countries including Britain, Spain, Norway, and Sierra Leone expressed concerns over the treatment of migrants in Libya, a key transit point for Africans fleeing conflict and poverty en route to Europe.
Libya’s acting Foreign Minister, Eltaher Salem M. Elbaour, acknowledged the challenges his country faces, citing efforts to ensure human rights are respected despite the delicate transitional period.
However, rights groups are pushing for reforms, citing impunity among armed groups and widespread abuses.
The U.N. has documented mass graves containing migrant bodies, some with gunshot wounds, further highlighting the dire situation. Libya’s detention centers have been criticized for their inhumane conditions, with reports of violence, extortion, and forced labour.
