Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed that Nigeria’s national team boycotted Tuesday’s training session in Rabat over unpaid allowances and bonuses.
The protest comes just days before the Super Eagles face Gabon in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. According to Troost-Ekong, the players decided collectively to skip training until the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) settles their outstanding entitlements.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the captain clarified that the team was not making any fresh demands but simply calling for the payment of what they are owed.
“Once a resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement, claim, or demand beyond our rightful request is false. All we want is to focus on the big games ahead,” Troost-Ekong wrote.
The Super Eagles’ training camp opened in Rabat on Monday, with 23 players already in camp as of Tuesday afternoon. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is the only player yet to arrive.
Among those present are Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, Semi Ajayi, and Samuel Chukwueze, among others.
The boycott has raised fresh concerns about player welfare and administrative accountability within Nigerian football, as the team continues preparations for Thursday’s decisive World Cup play-off against Gabon.
