The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution to establish an independent fact-finding mission to investigate reported mass killings in al-Fashir, Sudan.

The resolution, passed without a vote, strongly condemns the alleged ethnically motivated killings and use of rape as a weapon of war by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies.

The mission will document and preserve evidence, identify perpetrators, and lay the groundwork for future justice and accountability.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk emphasized the need for international action, citing “naked cruelty” and urging an end to the atrocities. The RSF has denied targeting civilians or blocking aid, attributing such activities to rogue actors.

The resolution also calls for humanitarian aid access to the famine-stricken city and warns of surging violence in Kordofan .
