Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in retaliation for the alleged ill-treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaian travellers by Israeli authorities.

The action was confirmed in an official statement released by the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which stated that the three Israelis arrived in Accra earlier in the day but were immediately expelled after Ghanaian officials concluded that Israel had unfairly targeted and traumatised Ghanaian travellers.

The Ghanaian government summoned the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Israeli Embassy in Accra, as the ambassador is currently out of the country, and both governments have agreed to pursue an amicable resolution of the diplomatic row.

The incident stems from the detention of seven Ghanaian travellers, including four members of a parliamentary delegation, at Ben Gurion International Airport on December 7, with three of them being deported without cause.

Ghana described Israel’s actions as “provocative, unacceptable and inconsistent” with their longstanding relations, rejecting Israel’s claim that the Ghanaian Embassy in Tel Aviv was uncooperative.

The Ghanaian government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity of its nationals and expects reciprocal respect from other countries.
