The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed excitement over Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s decision to represent Nigeria, seeing the 24-year-old as a valuable addition to the national team’s goalkeeping options.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo had previously featured for England at various youth levels. However, in December 2025, he officially switched allegiance to Nigeria, a move warmly endorsed by the NFF.

“Arthur Okonkwo is a prospect, and we believe the technical crew is delighted to have another option in the goalkeeping department,” NFF Director of Communications, Dr. Ademola Olajire, told ESPN. “The NFF is always excited to have another quality player committing to Nigeria and providing an option in a particular position.”

Okonkwo strengthens Nigeria’s current pool of goalkeepers, which includes Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye, and teenage talent Ebenezer Harcourt. Nwabali, Uzoho, and Obasogie are part of the Super Eagles squad currently competing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, while Okoye was not included.

Reports indicate that Okonkwo’s decision followed a meeting with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle in London during the Unity Cup tournament in June, which Nigeria won on penalties against Jamaica.

Okonkwo began his football journey at Hampstead Academy before joining the Arsenal Academy at age eight in 2009. He went on loan to Crewe Alexandra, Sturm Graz, and Wrexham between 2022 and 2024, eventually signing permanently with Wrexham on a three-year deal in 2024.

Last season, he kept 19 clean sheets in 33 League One appearances, conceding just 23 goals as Wrexham secured back-to-back promotions to the Championship. This season, he has recorded six clean sheets in 20 Championship appearances.

Wrexham currently sit 10th in the Championship, four points off the playoff places, following a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day, marking their third consecutive victory with Okonkwo again keeping a clean sheet.

Okonkwo’s decision is seen as a timely boost for Nigeria as the Super Eagles continue their AFCON 2025 campaign and look ahead to future competitions.
