A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle was completely engulfed in flames on Lagos’s Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread panic and massive traffic gridlock.
The incident happened around 1:00 p.m. near the Adekunle axis of the bridge, with the high-capacity bus heading towards Iyana Oworo.
Videos shared online showed the bus consumed by the inferno, with thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the air as other motorists slowed down or sought to divert from the scene.
Fortunately, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene. Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze while LASTMA officers managed the severe traffic backlog that stretched along the busy corridor.
The Third Mainland Bridge is one of the city’s most vital transport links, and incidents like this frequently cause significant, cascading delays across the city. As of now, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
