Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has announced he will not contest the results of Thursday’s presidential election in court, citing a lack of confidence in the judiciary. Instead, he is urging his supporters to take to the streets and peacefully protest the outcome.
Wine, a 43-year-old former pop star, claims the results are “fake” and alleges “ballot stuffing” without providing evidence.
He has been in hiding since fleeing his home during a security forces raid, and his family members are under house arrest.
Wine’s decision comes after President Yoweri Museveni, 81, was declared the winner with 72% of the vote, while Wine received 25%.
The African Union (AU) election observers reported “no evidence of ballot stuffing” but condemned the days-long internet shutdown. Museveni has accused the opposition of seeking to overturn the results through violence, labeling them “terrorists”.
