The country has been offering citizenship to those who can prove their ancestors came from Africa since 2016, primarily targeting descendants of transatlantic slave trade victims.

Over 1,000 people, including Stevie Wonder, have obtained Ghanaian citizenship, but applicants have complained about the lengthy process, high costs, and DNA evidence requirements.

The government aims to address these concerns and issue updated guidelines soon.

The suspension has caused uncertainty for potential applicants planning relocation or investments.

Ghana’s outreach to Africans worldwide is rooted in its Pan-African vision, and the country has seen investments in sectors like real estate, agriculture, and tech from diaspora members.
