The Lagos State government has suspended the demolition of homes in Makoko, a waterfront community, following protests by residents and civil society groups.
The Lagos State House of Assembly ordered the suspension, citing concerns over displacement and lack of consultation.
The demolition, which began in December 2025, had displaced over 10,000 people and sparked allegations of ethnic cleansing and forced eviction.
The Ogu General Assembly accused Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration of systematic ethnic cleansing, while the government claimed the demolitions were necessary for safety and urban renewal.
The Assembly will review the issues surrounding the demolitions and ensure due process is followed.
The government has allocated $2 million for Makoko’s development and promised compensation for affected residents.
