Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi has condemned Russia’s recruitment of Kenyan citizens to fight in Ukraine, calling it “unacceptable and clandestine”.

The government estimates around 200 Kenyans have been recruited, with some killed in combat.

Mudavadi says Kenya will discuss the issue with Russia, focusing on curbing illegal recruitment practices and securing a deal to ban conscription of Kenyan soldiers.

Kenya has shut down over 600 recruitment agencies suspected of duping citizens with promises of overseas jobs.

27 Kenyans have been repatriated, with authorities providing psychological care and “de-radicalisation” support. Ukraine estimates over 1,400 people from 36 African countries have been recruited to fight for Russia.

The Kenyan government faces pressure from families seeking answers about loved ones fighting in Ukraine.

Mudavadi rejects blame, citing efforts to regulate recruitment agencies.
