The Federal Government has filed charges against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations of intercepting National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications.
The charge, marked C2/99/2026, lists the Federal Republic of Nigeria as complainant and El-Rufai as defendant.
El-Rufai allegedly admitted to intercepting Ribadu’s phone communications during an Arise TV interview on February 13, 2026, which is considered an offence under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
The charges include failing to report individuals involved in the unlawful interception and using technical equipment to intercept Ribadu’s phone communications, compromising public safety and national security.
El-Rufai had claimed that Ribadu ordered his arrest and that his phone was tapped, revealing the plan to detain him.
The Presidency has called for an investigation, stating that El-Rufai’s admission suggests he and others may have wire-tapping facilities, posing national security implications.
