Iran’s shocking withdrawal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has left fans and football officials worldwide asking a pressing question: who will take their place?

The decision, confirmed by Iran’s Minister of Sport, comes amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, making participation in the tournament, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, impossible for the Iranian national team.

FIFA regulations provide some guidance but leave ultimate discretion to the governing body. According to Article 6.7, “If a participating member association withdraws and/or is excluded from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA will decide at its sole discretion and take any measures it deems necessary. FIFA may decide to replace the participating association in question with another association.”

This means the door is open for several possibilities, ranging from rewarding a historic footballing nation to selecting a team based on regional qualifying results.
One potential candidate is Italy, a four-time World Cup winner with a storied history in global tournaments. Should Italy fail to secure qualification through the play-offs, FIFA could, at its discretion, invite the FIGC to fill Iran’s slot, honoring its legacy and strong international record.
Several Nigerians will be hoping for the Super Eagles to somehow get into the World Cup Slot as FIFA is yet to make a decision on the eligibility of DR Congo National Football Team. The Chance of Nigeria is very slim because Iran is in Group G which consists of Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Egypt and NIgeria cant be in the same group because they are from the same African Continent.
Alternatively, FIFA might choose to prioritize representation from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Iraq, currently set to face either Bolivia or Suriname in a World Cup play-off, could emerge as a logical replacement, maintaining regional balance in the tournament.

While there is no official word yet, football enthusiasts and analysts are watching closely. The decision will not only affect tournament logistics but could also reshape the group stage dynamics and qualification path for several teams.

With the World Cup just months away, the clock is ticking for FIFA to decide on Iran’s replacement. Whether it will be a historic powerhouse like Italy or a rising contender from the AFC, the announcement promises to be one of the most intriguing storylines leading into the 2026 tournament.
