Transport drivers in Guinea-Bissau, including the capital Bissau, have gone on strike in protest of recent fuel price hikes.

The government raised diesel prices from 700 CFA francs to 898 CFA francs per liter and gasoline prices from 794 CFA francs to 899 CFA francs per liter, citing the Iran war and global oil price surge.

However, the government has forbidden increases in passenger fares, sparking the strike.

Taxi and van drivers in Gabu and Mansoa are not operating, leaving passengers stranded. The strike is expected to continue, with taxis in Bissau planning to join the protest on Wednesday.

The move has exacerbated fuel shortages in the country, which relies heavily on petroleum imports.
