Somalia’s defence ministry says its forces, alongside regional security units, have killed 27 al Shabaab militants in a major operation in the Jubbaland region, with support from international partners.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the operation took place across areas of Lower Jubba and Middle Jubba, where troops also recovered weapons and improvised explosive devices.

Although it did not identify the foreign partners involved, Somalia has previously received air support from international allies, including the United States, in its campaign against the militant group.

The ministry said those killed included key members of the insurgent organisation.

Al Shabaab, which has waged a long-running insurgency aimed at overthrowing Somalia’s federal government and imposing its strict interpretation of Islamic law, continues to carry out attacks despite sustained military pressure.

The group still maintains influence in rural areas, even as Somali forces and African Union-backed troops continue joint operations to weaken its network and restore government control in affected regions.
