Algeria’s former Industry Minister, Ali Aoun, has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of corruption, local media reported on Monday.

Prosecutors had reportedly sought a 12-year jail term in the case.

The conviction relates to the irregular sale of ferrous and non-ferrous metal waste, in breach of public asset management regulations.

Aoun served as Algeria’s industry minister between 2022 and 2024 before his prosecution.

Several other officials were also convicted in the case, although some were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

Among those sentenced was Aoun’s son, Mehdi Aoun, who received a six-year prison term.

A businessman, Abdelnour Abdelmoula, described in reports as the main defendant, was handed a 10-year sentence.

The case forms part of Algeria’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign launched under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who came to power in 2019 following widespread pro-democracy protests.

The crackdown has targeted several senior officials, including figures from the administration of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
