Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of Oyo State.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu stated that his decision will take effect from April 30, 2026. The letter was submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, with the minister noting that the timing would allow for a smooth and orderly transition.
Adelabu described his exit as one taken with “a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude,” thanking the President for the opportunity to serve in the administration. He characterized his appointment as a privilege and highlighted his contributions to ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector, which he described as critical to industrial growth and economic transformation.

According to him, stepping down is necessary to fully commit to his long-standing governorship ambition in Oyo State. He traced this aspiration back to 2016, during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and recalled that he previously resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.
The former minister also cited provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which restrict political office holders from contesting elections while in office, as a key reason for his decision.
He emphasized that resigning at this time aligns with legal requirements and ensures compliance as he prepares to enter the governorship race.
