The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a comprehensive increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move aimed at improving earnings and boosting morale across the public service.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a press briefing in Abuja, where she outlined reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council.

According to Walson-Jack, the review covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), ensuring that the adjustments cut across multiple cadres.

She explained that the revised peculiar allowances have been restructured across all grade levels, resulting in increased take-home pay for both junior and senior officers.

The government also approved upward reviews of key allowances, including Duty Tour Allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowance. Notably, civil servants attending approved training programmes will now receive 100 percent DTA, even when such training takes place within their duty locations.

Beyond salary adjustments, the government introduced a new exit benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The package guarantees retirees 100 percent of their total annual emoluments as an exit benefit, in addition to their pensions, effective January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack said the initiative is designed to ensure financial security and dignity in retirement, adding that no public servant should leave service without adequate support.

The Federal Government also confirmed the implementation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, which provides financial protection for workers in cases of job-related injury or death.

The reforms come amid increasing pressure from labour unions over rising living costs, with analysts suggesting the measures could improve financial stability and productivity within the public sector.
