The joint action committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its branches to suspend the ongoing strike from May 11, following a fresh agreement with the federal government.
The decision came after a series of meetings with the government’s expanded renegotiation committee, led by former head of civil service Yayale Ahmed.
According to the unions, discussions covered a controversial 30 percent salary increase under the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), which had earlier been proposed but later withdrawn by the government.
NASU and SSANU declared the strike on May 1 over the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a new offer on allowances. The unions said negotiations had been slow and had not met their expectations, prompting the industrial action.
In a circular issued on Wednesday and signed by NASU general secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU national president Mohammed Ibrahim, JAC said it had extracted a commitment from the government to conclude all outstanding renegotiations within two weeks of the suspension.
“The leadership of JAC considered the passionate appeal for the suspension of the ongoing strike action and also extracted a commitment from the FGN Expanded Renegotiation Committee that all renegotiations, including a reviewed offer of the CONTISS, shall be concluded in two weeks from the date of the suspension of the strike,” the statement reads.
Branch leaders have been urged to convene congresses and inform members of the suspension, effective Monday, May 11, 2026, while further engagements with stakeholders continue.
The unions thanked members for complying with the strike directive, describing the nationwide solidarity as encouraging.
