The Speaker of the Gwagwalada Area Council Legislative Arm, Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, has died from injuries sustained in a crash on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
Ibwa and his aide were involved in a head-on collision between a Mercedes-Benz car and a Sino truck at Sheda village around 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a witness quoted by Daily Trust. The aide died at the scene.
The Speaker was first taken to Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada, then referred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Thursday. A third person in the vehicle is receiving treatment.
Federal Road Safety Corps officials who participated in the rescue operation confirmed the incident.
Reports say the Speaker and his aides were returning from a political meeting in Kwali when their vehicle collided with an oncoming trailer near Sheda village.
He was buried according to Islamic rites in his Ibwa community in Gwagwalada. Political figures at the burial included Gwagwalada chairman-elect Hon. Mohammed Kasim Ikwa, former council chairman Alhaji Adamu Mustapha, and former House of Representatives member Isah Egah Dobi.
Former FCT senator Philip Aduda condoled with the family, describing the Speaker’s death as “shocking and painful.” He said Ibwa served his people with “dedication, humility and the fear of God.”
