Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has secured the All Progressives Congress, APC, ticket for Borno South Senatorial District, paving the way for a bid to return to the Senate for a fifth term.
Ndume emerged unopposed through an affirmation process at the party’s primary held in Maiduguri. He became the consensus candidate after his main rival, Abdullahi Askira, deputy speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, withdrew from the race last month.
Askira said he stepped down following consultations and appeals from party stakeholders in the district.
Speaking after the declaration, Ndume thanked APC elders, delegates, and members in Borno South for their support. He pledged to continue representing their interests and commended Askira for withdrawing from the contest.
“I must not fail to commend Honourable Askira, who listened to the persuasions and appeals of party leaders and took the decision to drop his aspiration. Your loyalty to the party is exemplary,” Ndume said.
He urged party members to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ndume first entered the National Assembly in 2003 as a member of the House of Representatives before moving to the Senate in 2011. If re-elected, he will begin a fifth term in the upper chamber.
