“Yes, the judge died Thursday evening and he has been buried. He was very hardworking during his lifetime. You know he handled many high-profile cases and dispensed justice accordingly,” one source said.

The Director of Information for the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, confirmed that Justice Yunusa died at the State Medical Centre in Kano.

Among the notable cases he handled was a post-2023 election matter in which the Kano division of the Federal High Court clarified that it had not nullified the candidature of Abia Governor-elect Alex Otti. The court had earlier nullified the election of Labour Party candidates in Kano, but Justice Yunusa ruled that the Abia candidates were not parties to the suit and that the court lacked jurisdiction to order the issuance of certificates of return.

The case was filed by Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim, who sought to revoke certificates of return issued to Labour Party candidates in Kano and 35 other states, including the FCT. The respondents were the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
