Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi participated in the African Democratic Congress presidential primary on Monday as the party held direct primaries nationwide for the 2027 elections.
Atiku cast his vote at Ajiya Ward in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, while Amaechi voted at Ward 5 in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The ADC is using the Option A4 method, with accredited members queuing openly for their preferred aspirants across 8,809 wards.
The contest for the party’s presidential ticket features three cleared aspirants: Atiku, Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. The primaries were conducted under the leadership of the National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark.
After voting, Atiku posted on X that the exercise was “democracy at work” and described it as a step toward recovering the country and setting it on a path of prosperity.
The ADC is also holding primaries for governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives positions. The process comes amid internal disagreements, with another group announcing the dissolution of the Mark-led NWC and naming Dumebi Kachikwu as its consensus candidate. The Independent National Electoral Commission’s website still recognizes the David Mark-led leadership.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress concluded its presidential primary on Sunday, with President Bola Tinubu securing 10,999,162 votes to emerge as the party’s candidate. The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for February 20, 2027.
