The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared Friday, May 30, 2026, as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, urging members to observe the day with quiet reflection and mourning.
In a statement on Friday by IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful, the group said the day was set aside to honour millions who died during the Nigerian civil war. IPOB described the occasion as a solemn period of reflection rather than celebration, to remember men, women, and children who died in the conflict.
The group said the remembrance day was a covenant between the living and the dead and that the memory of those who died could not be erased by propaganda or political convenience. It added that the day also provided an opportunity to reflect on issues of justice, accountability, and political restructuring in Nigeria.
IPOB paid tribute to soldiers, scientists, mothers, children, and civilians who lost their lives during the war, saying their sacrifice placed a duty of remembrance on future generations. On behalf of its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu, the group called on Biafrans in Nigeria and abroad to stay indoors and reflect quietly.
“Let our towns be quiet. Let our roads be empty. Let our homes become places of reflection,” the statement said.
IPOB also urged families to use the day to preserve the history and identity of the Biafran people for future generations.
