Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi are in Addis Ababa to sign a prisoner transfer agreement with Ethiopia. The deal gets inked Wednesday, Odumegwu-Ojukwu confirmed on X.
The agreement covers inmates at Kaliti Prison and Aba Samuel Prison. Four Nigerians have died while negotiations, judicial reviews, and ratification dragged on, the minister said.
“We cannot afford to lose any more precious lives. We are determined to bring home the living,” she wrote.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the deal is built on “humanity, justice, and cooperation” between both countries. She also urged Nigerians abroad to obey local laws, but stressed that citizens in legal trouble still deserve dignity and fair treatment under the law.
President Bola Tinubu has made the welfare of Nigerians overseas a priority, she added, and thanked Ethiopia for working toward the milestone.
