At least 28 people have been killed and several others injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in northern Ethiopia on Monday, local authorities have said.
The accident occurred along a route from Dessie in the Amhara region to the capital, Addis Ababa, when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road and fell into a ravine estimated to be about 100 metres deep.

Officials said 28 passengers died in the crash, while “many others” sustained varying degrees of injuries. The exact number of passengers on board has not yet been confirmed.
Survivors were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while emergency responders and local authorities launched recovery operations at the scene. An investigation has also been opened to determine the cause of the crash.

Images shared by regional officials showed the badly damaged bus lying on a steep hillside.

Road accidents remain frequent in Ethiopia, where poor road conditions and long-distance travel continue to contribute to fatal crashes. In recent years, the country has recorded several deadly incidents, including a 2024 crash in which more than 70 people died when a vehicle carrying a wedding party plunged into a river.
