Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shortly after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, announced her return on Monday during the unveiling of the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Speaking at the event, she expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances ahead of the 2027 governorship election, particularly the candidacy of Oladipupo Adebutu.
She described Adebutu as a long-standing contender for the governorship, expressing optimism that his political fortunes would change in the next election cycle following her return to the party.
Obasanjo’s defection comes days after she resigned from the APC, where she had cited alleged marginalisation, lack of internal consultation, and dissatisfaction with the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State.
She also alleged that some of her supporters were excluded from key party activities, despite earlier assurances of inclusiveness during the candidate selection process.
The former senator had joined the APC in January after registering in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
She previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health between 2003 and 2007 and represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011.
