The Lagos State Government says it will demolish all distressed buildings in the Alakija area of Amuwo-Odofin, following a two-storey collapse that killed nine people and left 27 others injured.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, made the announcement on Thursday during an inspection of the collapsed structure on Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop, Badagry Expressway.

Omotoso said the building had been marked for demolition and occupants were warned to vacate, but they ignored the notice. He added that all other weak structures and buildings located under high-tension power lines in the area will also be brought down to prevent further loss of life.

The commissioner, who led a state delegation to the site, expressed condolences to families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, confirmed it has ended search, rescue and recovery operations at the site. Twenty-seven people were rescued through joint efforts by LASEMA, other agencies and community members. Nine bodies were recovered, with four confirmed dead before responders arrived.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, to immediately assess the structural integrity of nearby buildings and enforce compliance with building codes in the area.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also provided updates on X during the rescue operation, noting that emergency teams were on ground at the Alakija site.

The collapse is the latest in a series of building failures in Lagos this year.
