Gunmen opened fire on Asimiyu Ajibola, the Accord Party chairman for Osogbo LGA in Osun State, late Wednesday night. The politician, widely known as ‘Baba Isila’, is now fighting for his life in hospital.
The attack happened around 9:50 p.m. near Community Bank at MDS, Osogbo. Residents said heavily armed men chased a blue Toyota Corolla carrying Ajibola and his friends, then riddled the car with bullets. Witnesses called it a coordinated hit.
“We were coming from MDS area when gunmen started chasing us and spraying bullets on the car,” one occupant told SaharaReporters. The group escaped to Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety before the attackers fled. Ajibola was rushed to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital with serious injuries and remains on the danger list.
Osun Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the shooting and urged police to investigate without bias. He said the attack “has elements of political colourations” and called for the culprits to be arrested.
As of press time, Osun Police PRO DSP Abiodun Ojelabi Zechariah had not confirmed the incident. The shooting has raised fresh fears about political violence in the state.
