Residents and businesses in parts of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states should prepare for a planned power outage on Sunday.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, announced it will shut down its Kumbotso 330kV substation in Kano for maintenance on June 28, 2026. The work will run from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, a total of four hours, according to a statement issued Friday by TCN’s Kano Region.
The outage is needed to allow contractors to complete upgrades at the facility. TCN said crews will upgrade 330kV Bus I jumpers and swap out old 350mm conductors for larger 800mm² conductors. The goal is to strengthen the transmission grid and make electricity supply more reliable in the long term.
Because of the shutdown, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, plus sections under Jos Electricity Distribution Company and Yola Electricity Distribution Company, will not be able to draw power for distribution.
Affected areas include parts of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states, as well as Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State, and Gazaoua in Niger Republic.
TCN apologized to customers for the temporary disruption and said the upgrade is part of efforts to improve service delivery.
