A teacher has been killed and dozens of students abducted after gunmen attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when the assailants, who reportedly arrived on motorcycles, stormed the school and opened fire before taking an unspecified number of students away.
The Special Adviser to the Adamawa State Governor on Media and Strategy, Solomon Kwamagar, who hails from Lassa, confirmed the incident.
According to him, the attackers entered the community through the weekly Lassa market before heading to the secondary school.
“Today is Lassa market day. I was informed that they came through the market on motorcycles and went to Government Day Secondary School, Lassa. They shot and killed one teacher and took away all the students who were in their classrooms,” Kwamagar said.
He explained that Lassa, located in Borno State near the Adamawa border, is predominantly inhabited by the Margi ethnic group, many of whom also reside in neighbouring Adamawa State.
Kwamagar said efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of students and teachers abducted during the attack.
“I am still making contacts to ascertain the total number of students and teachers who were kidnapped from the school,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as his telephone line could not be reached.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the security of schools in Nigeria’s North-East, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions and civilians.
