Cape Verde President José Maria Neves has expressed confidence that his country’s national team can stun defending champions Argentina when both sides meet in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday.
Speaking ahead of the clash in Miami, Neves predicted a 1-0 victory for the Blue Sharks, insisting the World Cup debutants have what it takes to overcome one of football’s biggest nations.

“We are playing to win. When expectations are low and a team has the desire to succeed, anything is possible,” Neves said.
Cape Verde have enjoyed a historic campaign, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage in their first appearance at the tournament.
The Blue Sharks secured their place in the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group H. They opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Spain before holding Uruguay to a 2-2 draw and earning another goalless draw against Saudi Arabia.

Their reward is a meeting with Lionel Messi-led Argentina, the world’s top-ranked team and defending champions.
Despite the gulf in experience and FIFA rankings between the two sides, Neves said Cape Verde would approach the match with confidence and determination.
“We went to this World Cup to write our own destiny by facing champions. We will play Argentina and Messi with the same determination and desire to win,” he said.
Head coach Pedro “Bubista” Leitão Brito also believes his team can continue their remarkable run, saying nothing is impossible for the Blue Sharks.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the opportunity to face Argentina as a dream, adding that while the challenge will be difficult, the team believes it can produce another surprise.
Neves added that regardless of the outcome, Cape Verde have already made history and will leave the tournament proud of their achievements after a memorable World Cup debut.
