The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents of Lagos and other coastal states to brace for a heightened risk of flash flooding as heavy rainfall is expected across southern Nigeria on Tuesday.
The warning was contained in the agency’s Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, which forecast sustained rainfall throughout the day, particularly in coastal and low-lying communities.

According to NiMet, thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected in the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
The agency said rainfall is expected to intensify later in the day, with moderate rainfall forecast across the entire southern region, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding in coastal areas, especially in Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

In the northern region, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states, while thunderstorms are expected to spread later in the day to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi states.
For the North Central region, the agency forecast predominantly cloudy conditions in the morning, with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Benue states. Moderate rainfall is expected across the region during the afternoon and evening.

NiMet advised residents to remain vigilant as strong winds could precede thunderstorms. It urged motorists to drive carefully during heavy rainfall and poor visibility and warned against walking or driving through floodwaters.
The agency also cautioned residents to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe and efficient flight operations as adverse weather conditions persist.
