Former Kano State Governor Senator Kabiru Gaya is heading back to the All Progressives Congress.
Gaya met privately with APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda at his Abuja residence on Yaounde Street on Monday night. The meeting lasted about 45 minutes, and according to a source present, Gaya agreed to rejoin the ruling party during the talks.
“Yes, Senator Kabiru Gaya has agreed to re-join the APC,” the source said.
The move comes just days after Gaya was said to have lost the National Democratic Congress ticket for Kano South. He had only recently defected to the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gaya’s political movement in the last few months has been busy. He resigned from the APC on April 5, spent a short time in the African Democratic Congress, and then joined the NDC alongside former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
He first served as Kano Governor during the Third Republic from 1992 to 1993. He later represented Kano South in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 on the APC platform, before losing his re-election bid in 2023 to Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
With 2027 approaching, Gaya’s return strengthens the APC’s presence in Kano South, a zone that has seen several high-profile defections in recent months.
