Esther Nworgu has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after dominating the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event in Glasgow.
Nworgu secured the top spot with a best lift of 123kg, earning 119 points to claim the gold medal and give Team Nigeria its first title of the Games.

Her victory also led to a one-two finish for Nigeria, with compatriot Esther Oyema taking the silver medal. Oyema recorded a best lift of 125kg and finished with 115.5 points.

England’s Olivia Broome completed the podium, winning bronze after lifting 119kg to score 106.6 points.

Nworgu also set two Commonwealth Games records during the competition, further highlighting her dominance in the event.
The achievement adds to Nigeria’s strong record in para powerlifting, one of the country’s most successful sports at major international competitions.
The Paralympic silver medallist delivered a composed and technically assured performance to overcome a competitive field, while the experienced Oyema added another major international medal to her decorated career.
