The European Union will not send a full team to watch Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, bringing to an end more than 20 years of large-scale EU observation missions in the country.

According to officials, the decision is driven by two main factors: worsening insecurity nationwide and what the EU described as hostile treatment of its staff after the 2023 polls. Instead of deploying long-term and short-term observers across states, the bloc will keep only about three officials based in Abuja to track developments.

Tensions started after the EU released its final report on the 2023 elections. The report was heavily criticized in Nigeria and sparked protests at the EU office in Abuja.

What this means:

  • End of an era: No full EU mission for the first time in over two decades
  • Limited presence: Roughly three EU officials will remain in Abuja, with no nationwide deployment
  • Stated reasons: Deteriorating security and treatment of 2023 observers
  • Possible impact: Less international on-the-ground scrutiny, which could shape how the 2027 elections are viewed globally. It also raises questions about whether other international observer groups will adjust their plans

The EU has not ruled out other forms of support, but for now its role will be much smaller than in previous cycles.
