A South Sudanese whistleblower who was abducted in Kenya in June and allegedly taken across the border to South Sudan has been released and is now back in Kenya, his family said Monday.
Athorbey Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit arrived in Nairobi on Saturday. According to a family statement, he is undergoing medical treatment after his health worsened while he was held in Juba.
Gaddhaffy-Dit holds both South Sudanese and Kenyan citizenship. His wife told police in June that armed, masked men seized him after he left a casino on the outskirts of Nairobi. Witnesses described the abduction in the report she filed at the time.
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi said in June that Gaddhaffy-Dit had told him in April that he had shared information about alleged high-level corruption inside South Sudan.
South Sudan government spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny did not respond to a request for comment on Monday. Juba has repeatedly rejected claims of systemic human rights abuses and widespread corruption.
Both Kenyan and South Sudanese officials said in June that they had no information about Gaddhaffy-Dit’s disappearance.
