Security forces in Zambia arrested 11 people early Friday, including senior opposition figures, after what the government called a foiled plot to destabilize the country. The arrests came just days after Thursday’s presidential election.

Among those detained was Brian Mundubile, the main opposition challenger in the presidential race. According to Patrick Kangwa, Zambia’s top civil servant, Mundubile was present during a raid in Lusaka.

Mundubile called the operation “an attempt on my life” and said “colleagues were shot” while he was there. He also said he was later questioned by army officers about two videos he posted and alleged he was assaulted in custody. The government denied that.

Officials say the group was linked to “military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal training camps.” Kangwa told reporters they had seized “high-grade military weapons,” ammunition, and other materials meant for an armed insurrection. He added that gunfire was exchanged when law enforcement moved in.

Other people arrested include Patrick Mwansa, who is married to Tasila Lungu, daughter of former president Edgar Lungu, along with several other politicians. All remain in custody at police stations across Lusaka.

The arrests come as vote counting continues. With results in from more than half of constituencies, Mundubile trails incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema. Mundubile had earlier declared himself the winner and cited voting irregularities.

The Electoral Commission briefly paused counting on Friday, citing attacks on polling staff and the theft of marked ballots. It resumed later that day, saying the security situation was under control.

International observers called election day largely peaceful and orderly, but flagged concerns about late electoral reforms, media freedom, and unequal access to media during the campaign.

Mundubile also accused Tanzania of interfering in the election. Tanzania’s government rejected the claim as false.

For now, the mood in Lusaka is calm as Zambians wait for final results, though police have increased their presence in parts of the capital.
