Veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday, August 25, 2026.
Hassan died on Sunday, August 23, at about 3:00 p.m. at the age of 66. The announcement was made by fellow actor Jide Kosoko on Instagram.
“With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of ALHAJI TAIWO HASSAN, popularly known as OGOGO, who passed away at 3:00 p.m. today Sunday, 23rd August 2026, at 66 years,” Kosoko wrote.
According to the family’s burial plans, his remains will be brought to Ilaro on Sunday ahead of a laying-in-state ceremony. That ceremony is scheduled for Monday at 11:00 a.m. at The Pavillon in Ilaro.
The Ilaro Muslim Community also confirmed the arrangements. The funeral prayer will hold earlier that morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground, and will be led by the Chief Imam of Ilaro.
The news of his passing had earlier been confirmed by Seun Oloketuyi, founder of Best of Nollywood, and other industry sources.
Hassan’s death comes just days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, made a public appeal for medical support. On August 17, Kaira said on social media that doctors had advised that chemotherapy could no longer be given due to his condition. The family disclosed that he had been battling stage-four cancer.
For decades, Ogogo was a central figure in Yoruba-language cinema. As an actor, producer, and mentor, he helped shape the growth of Nollywood and earned a reputation for commanding screen roles and for supporting younger talents.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, and stakeholders across the Nigerian entertainment industry, all remembering his contributions to film and culture.
May his soul rest in peace.
