Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi marked his first full appearance for Coventry City with a goal and an assist as the Sky Blues defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Awoniyi opened the scoring just three minutes into the encounter with a composed right-footed finish from the left side of the box, finding the bottom-right corner.

The Nigerian striker quickly turned provider two minutes later, setting up Jack Rudoni for Coventry’s second goal with a well-weighted pass. Rudoni finished calmly with his left foot from the right side of the box.

Plymouth reduced the deficit in the 21st minute through Oliver Irow, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, as Coventry went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The hosts drew level nine minutes into the second half when Xavier Amaechi produced a fine individual effort, dribbling through the Coventry defence before slotting the ball home.

However, Coventry responded strongly and regained control of the match.

Ephron Mason-Clark restored the Sky Blues’ lead in the 67th minute before Victor Torp added a fourth goal in the 78th minute to seal a 4-2 victory and send Coventry into the next round of the competition.

Awoniyi’s impressive outing ended with 20 minutes remaining when he was replaced by fellow summer signing Sidiki Cherif.

The performance represented a positive start to Awoniyi’s time at Coventry following his move to the club during the summer transfer window.

The Nigerian made his Coventry debut in their opening Premier League fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes in a 3-0 defeat.

Against Plymouth, however, Awoniyi was handed his first start and immediately made an impact with a goal and an assist.

The performance will provide the former Union Berlin striker with an early confidence boost as he looks to rediscover his best form and establish himself as a key player for Coventry during the 2026/27 season.
