Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to restore a targeted fuel subsidy if elected President of Nigeria, saying the country has sufficient resources to shield citizens from rising living costs.

Atiku, in a statement posted on X, said his position on fuel subsidy had remained unchanged, stressing that his proposed policy would focus on protecting Nigerians’ purchasing power rather than returning to what he described as an importation racket.

According to him, the high cost of petrol has contributed significantly to rising transportation and food prices, placing additional pressure on households and businesses.

He said his administration would seek to reduce the burden of energy costs while promoting local production and making essential goods and services more affordable.

“We are not talking about bringing back the old import racket. We are talking about a targeted subsidy that protects the purchasing power of Nigerians,” Atiku said.

The former vice president reiterated his position when he received the Osun State leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Atiku said the proposed policy would form part of broader measures aimed at addressing the economic hardship facing Nigerians and improving living standards.

He also pledged to support domestic production and pursue policies that would reduce energy costs and ease the financial burden on citizens.
