Uganda’s military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced late Tuesday that he intends to run for president in 2031.

Kainerugaba, 52, is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, 81, who has led Uganda since 1986. He also commands the Uganda People’s Defence Force land forces and heads the political group Patriotic League of Uganda.

In a series of posts on X, Kainerugaba said: “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God.” He added, referring to his father: “With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031.”

The general has long been viewed as a possible successor to Museveni. He played a prominent role in the January elections, ordering a crackdown on opponents and an internet shutdown that helped secure his father’s re-election. He had previously said he would contest that vote but later withdrew.

Kainerugaba is known for outspoken posts on social media, including past threats against opposition leader Bobi Wine. Wine left for the United States earlier this year, citing safety concerns. Another veteran opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, has been in prison since 2024 and is on trial for treason.

Museveni leads the ruling National Resistance Movement. Rights groups have accused his government of torture, kidnappings and arbitrary detentions. The government denies the allegations.

When asked if Museveni would seek another term, government spokesperson Alan Kasujja told Reuters the president and the party “will make that decision when the time comes.”
