Kenya has announced plans to register undocumented Burundians and other East African nationals living in the country following President William Ruto’s directive targeting foreigners operating small-scale businesses.
Government spokesperson Charles Owino said undocumented foreigners should register through their embassies or high commissions as authorities work to regularise their status.
The government also gave foreign business owners 90 days to regularise their immigration status, work permits and business licences, warning that the rules would thereafter be strictly enforced.
The move sparked panic among some Burundians, with hundreds queuing at their embassy in Nairobi to obtain emergency travel documents.
Kenyan officials have since assured foreign nationals that there is no blanket ban on foreign traders and warned against harassment or intimidation.
Burundi has expressed concern over the treatment of its citizens, while urging Kenya to protect Burundians living and working in the country.
