Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, who were abducted during the killing of a bank manager on the university campus last Sunday, have regained their freedom.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, confirmed their release in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.
Ezugwu said the students were currently receiving medical attention and psychological support at the university’s Medical Centre.
He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ikechukwu Dozie, had visited the students and interacted with them.
The university management also commended the Nigerian Police and other security agencies for their prompt intervention in securing the students’ release.
The statement read, “The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has confirmed the safe release of the two female students who were abducted during the gruesome killing of a branch bank manager, Mr Ossy, last Sunday.
“The management assures students, staff, parents, and the University community that additional security measures are being sustained in collaboration with relevant security agencies.
“Members of the University community are urged to remain calm and vigilant, and report any suspicious activity.”
The university further assured members of the community that the campus remained safe.
The students were abducted when gunmen attacked an Owerri-based branch manager of Polaris Bank on Sunday while he was within the university campus.
The bank manager was reportedly killed after resisting an attempt to kidnap him. He had reportedly gone to the university to drop off his children when the incident occurred.
