Cholera Outbreak in Nigeria’s Ogun State Claims Life of 62-Year-Old Woman, Five Hospitalised

The Ogun State Government has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old woman and the hospitalisation of five individuals.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, reported that the outbreak occurred four days ago. A community source revealed that the deceased contracted cholera while caring for her infected child, who is among the hospitalised.

In a press statement on Thursday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, Kunle Ashimi, noted the extensive impact of cholera, affecting 30 states nationwide, including Ogun. Ashimi expressed condolences, stating, “As of today, cholera has been reported in 30 states, including Ogun State, with at least 30 deaths nationwide. We pray for the souls of the departed.”

Ashimi assured the public that the NMA is on high alert and that the government has provided a contact number for reporting new cases.

Additionally, Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, reported that the cholera outbreak in Lagos State has resulted in 21 fatalities, up from the previous update of 350 suspected cases and 15 deaths.
