President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government concludes today at the 65th Ordinary Session held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu, who assumed the role in July 2024 after being unanimously endorsed at the 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, will pass the leadership torch to a new head.
During his tenure, Tinubu faced significant challenges, notably addressing military coups in member states such as Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.
Initially, he took a firm stance against these unconstitutional changes, leading to the imposition of sanctions. However, the approach shifted towards peaceful resolutions, resulting in the lifting of sanctions.
Tinubu also played a pivotal role in the 2024 Senegalese election by facilitating dialogue among stakeholders, underscoring his commitment to promoting democracy within the sub-region throughout his chairmanship.
